Spirit of Feng Shui Winter Newsletter

December 22, 2011

Terumi is great! – Steve Adler

On Winter Solstice, December 22, we have the longest night of darkness of the year. In contrast, celebrations of Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa all celebrate LIGHT and their themes promote JOY, PEACE and LOVE.

In Feng Shui, this is the KAN season representing CAREER. The element is water. So how is water connected to the season’s dominant themes? Consider that water covers 70% of our planet and makes up about 62% of our body. Water is therefore essential for vitality and life itself. When water is stagnant, scarce or polluted, it not only dramatically affects quality of life, it contributes to sickness and disease. North Americans are fortunate to have clean, abundant water.

Let’s look at water in relationship to career. The U.S. is recovering from a major recession, which suggests the movement of water metaphorically, has become a trickle or stagnant in pockets of the country with high unemployment rates.

Have you noticed that people who love what they do, have a lightness about them and their exuberance spreads a feeling of joy? Are you one of these people? If so, acknowledge yourself for BEING, like the season we are in, bearers of LOVE, LIGHT and JOY.

Perhaps you are in the category of – I don’t love what I’m doing. At age 23, I worked as a secretary in the Canadian Embassy on the exotic island of Sri Lanka. My boss spent half the workday on the golf course while I was anchored in the office and bored stiff. I felt totally stagnant at work. However, I made up for it outside of work by having the luxury of time (thanks to a live-in servant who shopped, cooked & cleaned). I engaged in things I loved to do: volunteering at an orphanage, studying Kandyan dance and more. My stagnant career was balanced by an abundant personal life. The following resources can help you if you are in the category of not enjoying your work.

Water takes on many forms such as the energy of quiet stillness equated with deep wisdom, to dynamic power. In 2011, three amazing women, Anacaria Myrrha, Annie Rohrbach and Laura Rose engaged the reflective waters of their wisdom and each, published a dynamic book tapping into their wealth of experience and knowledge. A new year often brings a desire for change, a fresh start. If there are areas in your life or career where you are feeling stuck or stagnant and desire change, these books can help you navigate your journey like the movement of flowing water.
